That trend worries universities and Indigenous leaders,聽who are concerned the slide聽could put at risk聽the聽strong gains聽of the past decade聽in聽Indigenous聽university access and attainment.
And there is still a 15 per cent gap overall in high school attainment between Indigenous and non-Indigenous young people.
黑料老司机 and the National聽Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Higher Education Consortium聽said they were concerned聽at the future implications聽from the latest figures.
黑料老司机 Chief Executive Catriona Jackson聽said the聽gulf聽in聽high school completions聽for young people in聽regional聽and remote areas聽鈥 revealed in the聽 report聽this week聽鈥撀爉ust聽be聽a major focus.
鈥淐ity kids are聽now almost聽on par with non-Indigenous Year 12 students,鈥 she said,
鈥淏ut the gap聽鈥撀燼nd聽the potential聽number of聽kids on a pathway to university 鈥 widens significantly聽the more聽regional and聽remote you go.鈥
NATSIHEC聽President Dr Leanne Holt聽said聽it was particularly聽concerning because聽a university education聽eliminates聽the gap in employment rates聽for聽Indigenous people.
鈥淗aving a聽degree聽opens so many doors聽鈥 including to good聽jobs and terrific opportunities,鈥 she said.
鈥淲e聽have to turn that聽picture on high school completions around聽so our young people in the regions and remote communities聽can also access those opportunities.鈥
The聽Closing the Gap strategy聽set a target to聽halve聽the聽gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous聽children聽with a Year聽12聽education.
Overall high school attainment for Indigenous young people rose from 45 per cent to 66 per cent聽from聽2008聽to聽2018聽鈥撀燾ompared to 91 per cent for non-Indigenous students.
That big gain reduced聽the gap with non-Indigenous young people from聽40 per cent to 25 per cent.
But attainment rates聽actually fell聽slightly聽for young Indigenous people in regional areas.
