In a speech at UNSW Sydney, the Prime Minister said Australia鈥檚 universities 鈥渂ring the world together鈥 and that their global network of hundreds of thousands of alumni are central to the 鈥渄ynamism, economic growth and partnership that we want to see more of鈥.
鈥淭he ongoing role of Australian education in the region is vital to security and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific; as I often say, you can鈥檛 have one without the other,鈥 said Prime Minister Turnbull.
黑料老司机 Chief Executive Catriona Jackson warmly welcomed the Prime Minister鈥檚 comments, which also highlighted the importance of research collaboration.
鈥淔or six decades Australia鈥檚 universities have educated and trained hundreds of thousands of people from our region and helped inspire innovation across the Indo-Pacific through major research partnerships,鈥 Ms Jackson said.
鈥淭he Indo-Pacific is home to more than 4.3 billion people 鈥 60 per cent of the world鈥檚 population,鈥 she said.
鈥淭hat鈥檚 a whole world on our doorstep. Australia鈥檚 universities have driven development and improved people鈥檚 lives. They鈥檝e also forged valuable and long-lasting cultural, economic and political ties that have brought Australia and the region together.鈥
鈥淎nd when international students return home from their studies 鈥 which the vast majority do 鈥 this creates a powerful network of global alumni with great affection for Australia.鈥
鈥淭here is no doubt that education is key to peace and prosperity in our neighbourhood.鈥
International education brings in $32 billion to the economy and supports 130,000 Australian jobs.
鈥淎ustralia educates half a million students from nearly two hundred countries 鈥 that鈥檚 such a strong foundation for Australia鈥檚 friendships, diplomacy and trade in the decades ahead,鈥 said Ms Jackson.
鈥淚t is heartening to see the Prime Minister recognise the important and fundamental role our universities play in developing meaningful ties that benefit all of us both at home and abroad.鈥
