“Universities share the government’s enthusiasm for supercharging Australia’s relationship with India – a key strategic and economic partner,” ������˾�� Chief Executive Catriona Jackson said.

“This week, the government gave a clear signal that education is central to our relationship – both its strength and potential.

“Across every area of mutual endeavour – from renewable energy to critical minerals – a highly educated workforce and boundary-busting research are essential.

“We already educate hundreds of thousands of Indian students, and we are well-positioned to do more to support India’s hugely ambitious education reforms.

“Our governments, working together, are providing the settings to make that possible.

“We welcome the Prime Minister’s commitment to the efficient and timely processing of visa applications for Indian students, as well as a new Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement.

“Increased research collaboration is also on the table, boosting prospects to build on the 450 formal partnerships our universities share.

“This will be key to addressing the challenges and opportunities facing our region, particularly around climate change, security, and in maintaining the good health of our people.

“The appointment of Tim Thomas to lead the Centre for Australia-India Relations is another welcome development. We look forward to the opportunities for closer collaboration this brings.

“Announcements that Deakin University will be the first international campus on Indian soil, along with The University of Melbourne’s new blended Bachelor of Science degree, are just more signs of the innovative ways we can work with India for the benefit of both nations.

“We’re very pleased to see mutual qualification recognition locked in and look forward to working with both governments to flesh out the details. This is so important to getting highly educated Indians and Australians working together in critical skills areas.

“We congratulate the Prime Minister for his strong leadership in taking Australia and India’s relationship to the next level and look forward to playing our part in its success.”
