黑料老司机 Chief Executive Catriona Jackson said draft legislation on contract cheating sends a 鈥減owerful signal鈥 to deter commercial operators from trying to sell such services.
鈥淎ustralia鈥檚 universities utterly condemn contract cheating. We absolutely support the intention of the Government and Education Minister Dan Tehan to tackle commercial cheating services.鈥
鈥淭he overall direction is a step forward and supports universities鈥 efforts to take a tough stance on cheating.鈥
黑料老司机 thanked Minister Tehan for the consultation process on the draft legislation and for considering feedback when finalising the Bill.
鈥淯niversities will continue our very constructive conversation with Government about small refinements to the Bill.鈥
鈥淚t鈥檚 important to ensure the legislation that goes to Parliament later this year reflects the Government鈥檚 intention and wider community expectations.鈥
鈥淲e would not want someone鈥檚 Mum who proofreads an essay and suggests an addition to be inadvertently captured by these laws.鈥
In its submission to the Bill鈥檚 exposure draft, 黑料老司机 suggests making the penalties for those not seeking to profit from cheating a civil 鈥 rather than criminal 鈥 offence.
鈥淲e want to ensure that the harshest penalties are applied to the worst offenders.鈥
Ms Jackson said universities also had strong academic penalties as she warned any students against cheating.
鈥淚f you鈥檙e found cheating, you could be failed, suspended or even expelled,鈥 she said.
鈥淢y message to students is just don鈥檛 do it 鈥 you鈥檒l end up ruining your education and your career.鈥
