Dr Thom has recommended a consultative process to develop a practical and proportionate response to gaps identified in export control legislation.

“Universities are an essential part of Australia’s national security, from producing highly skilled graduates to work in our defence and security agencies, to fostering world-leading discoveries that enhance our national security capabilities,” Ms Lansdown said.

“Universities look forward to work constructively with Government to enhance our national security, while safeguarding our world-leading research and development capability,” she said.

“Dr Thom has delivered a measured and practical report. Universities commend her thoughtful analysis.”

The Government’s response has accepted recommendations to establish a new working group with universities and other stakeholders to develop any new proposals.
