The $20 million聽鈥楯obs for Canberrans鈥櫬爁und will provide employment opportunities with the ACT Public Service from now until June 2021.
黑料老司机 Chief Executive Catriona Jackson said the initiative聽was a potential lifeline to international students studying in the capital.
鈥淢any international students, just鈥痩ike their Australian friends, have seen their part time jobs disappear聽overnight聽through no fault of their own. They continue to live and study here, despite losing their income and聽not being eligible for the聽Government’s聽JobKeeper聽support package,鈥澛燤s Jackson said.
鈥満诹侠纤净 welcomes the 鈥楯obs for Canberrans鈥 plan聽and the decision to give highest priority to those who聽are ineligible for existing Federal Government support.鈥
International students聽can聽work up to 40 hours per fortnight聽to supplement聽their living and studying costs.
Ms Jackson said UA was聽continuing聽discussions with Federal and聽state聽governments聽about providing hardship support to聽international聽students聽who have chosen to study聽in Australia.
鈥淭he ACT Government聽will聽benefit from having some very talented,聽industrious聽and appreciative聽international students聽working for them. And international students have the chance to earn some much-needed income.鈥
Ms Jackson said聽every university was聽already聽offering some sort of support while many have established hardship funds for both Australian and international students.聽The support includes:
- Cash grants to cover immediate essential聽living聽costs including聽accommodation,聽food and travel;
- Free meals through on-campus accommodation providers and food vouchers;聽and
- Free or low-cost IT equipment聽and data聽packages聽to allow students to continue studying online.
Those based in the ACT and seeking short term/casual employment are encouraged to check their eligibility and register their interest via the 鈥.
